Contour Estate was established in 2004 after 10 years researching the various wine growing regions of New Zealand. Many things were considered in the choice of location, including, soils, climate, grape variety and lifestyle of the region. Matakana was chosen as an up and coming wine region and its close proximity to Auckland. Now with over 32 vineyards within the area, Matakana has become a regular day trip for many of Auckland’s wine aficionados. With its temperate maritime climate and many beaches, Matakana has become an increasingly popular tourist attraction.
After five vintages using grapes from the rich iron clay soils of Matakana, Contour Estate is now producing wines from their Hawkes Bay vineyard. This very small plot situated on the Gimblett Gravels provides small clusters of hand picked fruit that are dense in colour and fully fruit driven.
To ensure the highest level of production needed to produce premium quality wines, traditional wine making equipment was imported from Italy. Specialist production techniques combined with hand harvesting and low cropping at vintage time, are all part of the philosophy to ensure only wines of a premium quality are produced at Contour Estate.
